Become a Lean, Green Fighting Machine
Do you know what types of food fuel your body the best? Or, what vitamins and nutrients are essential for your survival? How about protein? Do you know what a serving of salmon looks like? Do you even know where the produce you buy comes from?
Althought this may seem like a lot of questions to ask all at once, it’s important for you to understand how essential good nutrition is in terms of your fitness goals. Without a healthy diet, you have to work out twice as hard at the gym. It really defeats the purpose of exercise if you plan on eating greasy fast food everyday for lunch.
A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of leafy green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and fat-free dairy products. You can even have fats and sugar but in moderation. Knowing which foods offer the most bang for their caloric value will help you keep on track in the gym. You will know exactly how many calories you need to burn in order to meet your fitness goals.
Experiment with different ways of cooking. You can bake, braise, broil, grill, poach, roast, saute, steam, and stir-fry different types of meats and vegetables. You can also use a variety of herbs and seasonings to bring out the natural flavors of the food that you are cooking. Try fresh rosemary, thyme, mint, oregano, cilantro, and parsley to kick up your meals a notch or two.
Before you know it, you’ll be able to evaluate the nutritional value of a certain type of food by memory alone. This can be really useful in situations where you are away from home and not the one preparing your meals. Remember that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Train yourself to eat right and to work out at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. It will make you look and feel incredible!
